RADNOR TWP., PA – The members of the Radnor Fire Company take great pride in participating in the Memorial Day Parade in honor of the veterans and current service men and women who serve our country. Every day including this special one, our volunteers and staff stand ready to respond at a moment’s notice to an emergency.

As the parade was underway, a citizen ran to the fire station, at 10:29 a.m., and reported that someone had collapsed at the Radnor Township War Memorial located at the corner of South Wayne Ave. and Runnymede Ave. Within seconds Radnor firefighters, EMTs and Paramedics were on location assessing the unresponsive victim and initiating CPR. After several hundred chest compressions were performed, along with supplemental oxygen being administered, the patient regained consciousness.

The patient was transported by Radnor Fire Company Ambulance to Bryn Mawr Hospital and received Advanced Life Support (ALS) treatment along the way. The patient arrived at the hospital within 15 minutes of CPR being started.

Due to the combination of a quick notification from an alert citizen, rapid emergency response and teamwork this 68-year-old military veteran is expected to make a full recovery.

In the early afternoon at 1:26 p.m., Radnor EMTs and Paramedics were summoned to the La Maison Apartments on Sugartown Rd. for a drowning at the pool.

First responders arrived on location to find a 12-year-old female in critical condition after a near drowning. Prior to arrival of EMS, a lifeguard and civilians had pulled the child out of the pool and began CPR efforts.

EMTs and Paramedics quickly began treatment of the victim and readied them for transport to the Ambulance. Simultaneously, firefighters were setting up a landing zone on South Devon Ave. at the Warren Filipone Memorial Park.

The child was airlifted by PENNSTAR aeromedical to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in critical condition. The 12-year-old was released from the hospital this week and is expected to make a full recovery. Once again, teamwork and assistance from the public contributed to a successful outcome.

A total of ten (10) incidents were handled by the volunteers and staff of the Radnor Fire Company on this Memorial Day, including these two life-saving incidents that occurred.

The Radnor Fire Company encourages all members of the public to obtain CPR training. When a person receives CPR the blood flow continues to pump through their heart and keeps the body oxygenated. This activity decreases the likelihood a victim will suffer from brain damage or death.
