March 16, 2024

The Officers and Members of the Radnor Fire Company are heartbroken to announce the passing of former Fire Chief and Honorary Active Member Donald A. Wood. Don passed away on Thursday, March 14th, 2024.
Woody, as he was known to us, joined RFC as a “School Boy Fireman” in 1953 while he was a student at Radnor High School when it was next door to our station. During his 62 years of active service, Don wore many hats for the Company; serving as Ambulance Committee Chairman, EMS Manager, Treasurer, Safety Officer, Second & Third Assistant Chief and 3 separate terms as Fire Chief. Don also served as the Fire Marshall for Radnor Township for 22 years. One of Don’s biggest fire service prides was teaching at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, MD for 32 years.

While studying electrical engineering at Lehigh University, Don decided teaching was his passion. After graduating from Lehigh, Don earned his master’s in education from the University of Pennsylvania and began a 30-year career teaching Physics at Radnor High School. Any of Mr. Wood’s students will remember his passion for teaching and his calm demeanor in ensuring his students retained the knowledge he imparted to them.

Don is survived by his loving wife Nancy, his four children Barbara, David, Susan & Connie and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

We will all miss you terribly, Don. May you rest in peace, we’ve got it from here.

Chief Wood’s viewing and funeral will be Thursday, March 21st at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Devon.
Visitation will be at 10:00AM followed by the service at 11:00AM.
